Essential Planning: Getting Your Drywall Estimate Right
Accurate material calculation is the foundation of any successful and budget-conscious construction project. For a standard drywall partition (using metal studs/LGSF), knowing the precise quantities of gypsum boards, metal studs, and ancillary items prevents costly delays, material shortages, or excessive waste.
Follow this step-by-step guide for a precise drywall quantity estimation.
Step 1: Calculate the Surface Area (Gypsum Boards)
The first step is to determine the total surface area of the walls you need to cover.
Measure and Calculate Area (A): Measure the length (L) and height (H) of each wall section. Area of one side = L × H. Total Area of the Partition (both sides) = 2 × (L × H).
Account for Openings: Calculate the area of any doors (AD) or windows (AW) and subtract them from the total area.
Determine Board Quantity: Standard Gypsum Board size is typically 1.2 m × 2.4 m (or 4 ft × 8 ft), covering 2.88 m2 (or 32 ft2). Number of Boards = Total Area to Cover / Area of One Board.
Add Waste Factor: Always add a 5% to 10% waste factor to the board count to cover trimming, damaged pieces, and irregular cuts, especially around doors and windows.
Step 2: Calculate the Metal Studs and Tracks
The metal frame provides the support structure for the drywall partition project.
Tracks (UW/U-Channels): Tracks are installed along the floor and ceiling. Quantity = Sum of the total length of the partition at the floor and ceiling (Floor Length + Ceiling Length). Note: Tracks usually come in 3 m or 4 m lengths. Divide the total length by the length of one track piece.
Studs (CW/C-Channels): Studs are the vertical members. Standard spacing is 40 cm (0.40 m) or 60 cm (0.60 m) to ensure board edges fall on a stud. Quantity = Total Partition Length / Stud Spacing + 1 (for the extra starting/ending stud). Note: Multiply this number by the partition height to get the total linear meters, then divide by the stud piece length (e.g., 3 m or 4 m). Important: Add extra studs around all door and window openings (jambs and headers).
Step 3: Calculate Accessories (Joint Finishing)
These consumables are often overlooked but crucial for a smooth finish.
Screws (Drywall Screws): Standard practice requires approximately 13 to 15 screws per square meter (m2) of covered area (on one side). Quantity = Total Area to Cover × 15. Tip: Screws are typically purchased in boxes of 1,000 or 500 pieces.
Joint Tape and Compound: Joint tape covers the seams between boards, preventing cracks. Estimate around 3-4 linear meters of tape per square meter of board surface. Joint Compound (Mud): This is used to embed the tape and coat the screw heads. Estimate 0.8 kg to 1.0 kg of compound per square meter (m2) of board surface for a standard 3-coat finish.
Calculation Example
For a partition 5 m long and 3 m high (both sides):
Total Area: 2 × (5 m × 3 m) = 30 m2
Boards (2.88 m2 each): 30 / 2.88 ≈ 10.42 boards. With 10% waste: 10.42 × 1.1 = 11.5 boards (round up to 12)
Studs (40 cm spacing, 3 m high): 5 m / 0.4 m + 1 = 13.5 vertical supports. 13.5 × 3 m = 40.5 linear meters. 14 studs needed.
